StaySafe Lite

THE DESCRIPTION:
“StaySafe” locates and identifies registered sex offenders in a given area.

THE GOOD:
StaySafe lets you use your current location to get a risk assessment based on the number of offenders living in the vicinity. You can see a photo, statistics, and charge details for each offender. The app also allows you to search for people based on their name or physical features. When you open the program, you will see a disclaimer against harassment.

THE BAD:
Retrieving data for your location can take a while, and you need the internet to do it. You’ll also have to upgrade ($14.99) to see all of the offenders in your area. Beyond the technical and financial issues, there is the inherent strangeness of offender locators. Do you want to go out of your way to ostracize somebody who is marginalized and mentally unstable?

THE BOTTOM LINE:
If you have children, this service can help them recognize which faces to avoid. Still, you can access the same information on the Internet at no cost, and the free application will only show you one full profile per area. You probably don’t need to take the program with you everywhere, but go for it if the website isn’t enough. “OffenderLocator” ($.99) will provide a full list of names at a much lower cost than the full version of “StaySafe.”
